Bismillah Hir Rahman Nir Raheem.

Respected president of the meeting Dr. Ansarul Huq, advisors Prof. Md. Saleh, Prof. Ava Hossain, Prof. Deen Mohd. Noorul Huq, Prof. Md. Sahab Uddin and Prof. Md. Sharfuddin Ahmed, my dear members of the Executive Committee, honorable life members and general members: please accept my heartfelt thanks and gratitude to be present in this annual general meeting.

We should have arranged this meeting few months earlier as we have completed our tenure in December 2016. But due to some unavoidable reasons we had to extend the tenure according to the constitution with the kind approval of executive committee.

We held our last general meeting on 27 may, 2014 and then an extra ordinary general meeting on 9 July, 2015. Since then we have lost our founder president, our beloved teacher and leader Prof. A.H. Syedur Rahman. He left us on 28 January, 2016. I pay homage to his memory and pray for the eternal peace of his soul.

We arranged a number of scientific sessions and symposiums in this tenure. the highlight of the past two years was the 1st Annual Conference on 19 and 20 February, 2015 held at RAOWA Club, Mohakhali where Dr. Manish Nagpal was present present as the guest faculty. More than 500 enthusiastic ophthalmologist, trainees and residents in ophthalmology and fellows of retina, attended it. There were many landmark events during this conference beginning with the distribution of the Indirect Ophthalmoscopy Training Kit that contained detailed video instructions on indirect ophthalmoscopy as well as a model eye for practice.  On 20 February, there was another session on retina surgery at labaid hospital auditorium. It was a closed door session for the practicing VR surgeons and members of BVRS. Specific VR surgical scenarios were presented and the best possible surgical approaches were discussed. The participants got  ample opportunity to clarify their queries in day to day surgical practice. The Annual Conference was concluded by a unique and diverse cultural evening starting with presentations of wild life photography and ending with classical music presented by a Sarod maestro.

On 18 October, 2015, we arranged another mega event on Ocular Oncology. The guest faculty was Dr. Fairooz. It was also attended by more than 500 ophthalmologists. This was a great lap to popularize this subject among our ophthalmologists and also to strengthen this subspecialty in our country.

Ret-Q is the scientific forum for the BVRS members. Here our members have an opportunity to present their complicated cases and discuss and clarify on queries they have.

In 2016 we arranged 3 Ret-Q sessions.

We are planning to have a very eventful next two years: 2017 and 2018. If all goes well and by the grace and help the Almighty we plan to achieve the following:

  1. 8 Ret-Q Sessions in 2017 and 2018
  2. A national seminar and workshop in September 2018
  3. Diabetic Retinopathy awareness program: 6 programs in  6 divisional head quarters. All ophthalmologists, general practitioners and general ophthalmologist will be invited to join.

Dear Members,

We could have done much better in this tenure, we could have arranged more national and international seminars and symposiums. Still we tried to do our best, our biggest blow was the sad demise of our founder president, guide and mentor.

I can assure you that the new committee will do much better. At this context I want to thank my seniors, teachers and junior colleges for their active support which made our journey smooth, thank Dr. Subhadra Jalali, a real friend of Bangladesh, for taking  the  trouble to come to Dhaka. I also thank the senior teacher  for their support and  active participation in this conference. I wish all  of you a happy and prosperous life both socially and professionally.

Thank you
Dr. Niaz Abdur Rahman
Secretary General
